Dewormer-2.jpeg

Which Dewormer Is Best for Your Horse?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "What's the best dewormer for my horse?" The answer depends on your horse, the parasites you're trying to control, and your veterinarian's recommendations.

Every farm is different, and not every horse has the same parasite risk. The best approach is to work with your local veterinarian to develop a deworming program that makes sense for your horses. Fecal egg counts can also be a valuable tool in determining when treatment is needed.

Active Ingredients Treats Does not Treat
Ivermectin Large strongyles, small strongyles (adult stages), roundworms (ascarids), pinworms, stomach worms, bots Tapeworms
Moxidectin Large strongyles, small strongyles (including encysted larvae), roundworms, pinworms, stomach worms, bots Tapeworms (unless combined with praziquantel)
Fenbendazole Large strongyles, roundworms, pinworms. A 5-day high-dose treatment may also treat encysted small strongyles.* Bots, tapeworms
Praziquantel Tapeworms
All other common internal parasites

Why Do Some Dewormers Have Two Active Ingredients?
Some products combine two active ingredients to provide broader parasite control.

For example:

-Powermectin® and Panomec® contain ivermectin only.
-Equimax® and Eqvalan® contain ivermectin + praziquantel, adding tapeworm control.
-Quest Gel® contains moxidectin.
-Quest Plus® contains moxidectin + praziquantel, adding tapeworm control.
-Safe-Guard® contains fenbendazole only
The addition of praziquanttel allows these products to treat tapeworms while the ivermectin or moxidectin controls other common internal parasites.

Choosing the Right Dewormer
There is no single dewormer that is best for every horse. Understanding the active ingredients and the parasites they target can help you make an informed decision.

If you're unsure which product is right for your horse, stop by Early's Farm & Garden. We'd be happy to help you compare products and answer your questions.

A lawn in Saskatchewan isn’t just about appearance—it’s about resilience. Between hot, dry summers, cold winters, variable soil types, and everything from full sun to deep shade, there is no single grass seed that works for every property.

That’s why Early's Farm & Garden Centre offers a range of custom lawn seed blends designed specifically for the conditions found across Saskatchewan.

Each blend serves a different purpose. The key is matching the seed to your site conditions, maintenance level, and long-term expectations.

Erin Green – Premium Heirloom Lawn Blend

Erin Green is the classic “show lawn” mixture. It’s designed for homeowners who want a dense, lush, highly uniform turf.

With a high percentage of Kentucky bluegrass, this blend creates a rich, traditional lawn appearance that improves with proper care over time.

Best for:

  • Full sun residential lawns
  • High-maintenance yards
  • Homeowners who regularly water, fertilize, and mow

Not ideal for:

  • Heavy shade
  • Low-maintenance properties
  • Dry sites without irrigation

If your goal is a manicured, high-quality lawn, this is the top-tier option.

Shady Glenn – Built for Low Light Areas

Not every yard gets full sun. Trees, buildings, and property orientation often create shaded or partially shaded zones where standard grass struggles.

The Shade Tolerant Mix is designed specifically for these environments, using a balance of fine fescues and bluegrass to maintain coverage where light is limited.

Best for:

  • Tree-covered yards
  • North-facing or shaded areas
  • Mixed sun and shade conditions

Not ideal for:

  • Full sun “perfect lawn” expectations
  • High-intensity, high-traffic turf use

This is the go-to solution for keeping shaded areas green and functional.

Western Parks – Country & Cottage Lawn Mix

For larger properties and lower-maintenance spaces, Western Parks is one of the most versatile blends.

It’s built to handle reduced watering and less frequent maintenance while still establishing a reliable turf cover. This makes it especially popular for acreages, cottages, and rural properties.

Best for:

  • Acreages and farmsteads
  • Cottages and seasonal properties
  • Parks, boulevards, and large open areas
  • Lawns with limited irrigation

Not ideal for:

  • High-end residential “show lawns”
  • Strictly ornamental landscaping

This blend is about durability and practicality over perfection.

XERI Lawn – Ultra Low Maintenance Natural Lawn

XERI Lawn is designed for situations where minimal input is the goal. It uses a high proportion of fine fescues, making it well-suited for dry, poor, or shaded soils.

Once established, it requires significantly less mowing, watering, and fertilizing than traditional turf blends.

Best for:

  • Low-maintenance residential yards
  • Dry or nutrient-poor soils
  • Naturalized or eco-style landscapes
  • Areas where mowing is limited or reduced

Not ideal for:

  • Formal, manicured lawns
  • Sports-quality turf appearance

This is the closest option to a “plant it and let it adapt” lawn.

Reclamation Grass Seed – Erosion Control & Site Recovery

Some sites aren’t about lawns at all—they’re about restoration.

Reclamation Grass Seed is formulated for tough environments where soil stability and fast establishment are more important than appearance.

It’s commonly used on construction sites, slopes, roadsides, and disturbed land.

Best for:

  • Erosion control areas
  • Construction and disturbed sites
  • Roadways and rights-of-way
  • Rough or low-fertility soils
  • Large-scale stabilization projects

Not ideal for:

  • Residential front lawns
  • Decorative landscaping

This mix is built to hold soil in place and establish coverage under difficult conditions.

How to Choose the Right Blend

A simple way to think about lawn selection is to match three key factors:

  • Sunlight (full sun vs shade)
  • Maintenance level (high care vs low care)
  • Purpose (appearance vs function vs restoration)

Quick guide:

  • Perfect lawn + full sun → Erin Green
  • Shade + residential yard → Shady Glenn Mix
  • Large acreage / low water → Western Parks
  • Minimal maintenance / natural look → XERI Lawn
  • Soil repair / erosion control → Reclamation Mix
  • ALL Grass Seed needs additional care &  proper watering to establish initially, see our guides on establishing new lawn & overseeding.

The Overlap Reality

In practice, many properties fall into “overlap zones.” For example:

  • A shaded acreage might combine traits of Shade Tolerant and Western Parks needs
  • A rural yard might lean toward both low maintenance and moderate appearance
  • A heavily treed property might require Shade Tolerant or XERI depending on maintenance goals

That’s why custom blending is also available—because no two properties are exactly the same.

Final Thought

Choosing the right seed at the start is the most important step in building a successful lawn. Fertilizer, watering, and mowing all help—but they can’t fully compensate for the wrong seed in the wrong location.

That’s why Early’s focuses on region-specific blends designed for real Saskatchewan conditions, not generic one-size-fits-all mixes.

If you’re unsure which blend fits your property, bringing in a description—or even photos—can help narrow it down quickly.
