Long a home garden favorite. Mary Washington asparagus is known for its flavorful, large thick shoots that are dark green with a purplish cast. Its rust resistance means plants remain vigorous and produce year after year for 15 more years. Perennial plants grow tall and should be located at the back of the garden.

Plant: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing indoors in pots in late winter or early spring. Don't thin. Transplant seedlings to garden in late spring when 4" (10cm) tall.

Care: locate in deep, well prepared soil with organic matter. Water regularly and mulch. Fertilize as growth starts each spring. Cut off dead tops in fall.

Harvest: Wait until third spring. Cut spears when 4" to 6"(15cm), cutting 1" (2.5cm) below soil.
