Planting Spring Bulbs

Spring bulbs are now in stock and ready to plant!

Begonias, Dahlias, Lilies, Callas, Cannas, Glads, & Minor Bulbs; including Liatris, Ranunculus, Anemone De Caen, Sparaxis, & Freesia

A great selection of varieties and colors to choose from.  Have an array of blooms fill your garden!

Helpful Tips for starting you bulbs:

Dahlias
Dahlias can be started early indoors and gently transplanted outside after all danger of frost has passed. They are very sensitive to frost. These flowers thrive on attention.  When transplanting outside, dig a hole about 5-8 inches deep and set root in.  Add a bulb fertilizer to the hole when planting. Water-in well.  If some leaves are below the soil level, pinch them off before filling in.
During the first month of growth pinch out the tip of the new shoots to encourage bushier growth.  Fertilize with 10-52-10 for the first 3-4 weeks and then switch to 20-20-20.  If neglected by inadequate fertilizer, poor soil or lack of water the stems and shoots can become woody and never thrive and produce flowers to their full potential. Dahlias need deadheading regularly.

Lilies
Plant lilies in full sun, with 4-6 inches of soil on top of the tip of the bulbs.  Bulbs can be started indoors and transplanted outside after all danger of frost. Most lilies are winter hardy here. For the first winter it is helpful to cover your lilies with a mulch and after that they usually thrive in your yard.
Let lilies die back naturally to ensure that the nutrients from the plant go back into the bulb to make a strong bulb for the following year.

Gladiolus
Glads are easy to grow. They require full sun, and rich well drained soil. The larger the corms the deeper they should be planted so they don't fall over when the flower spike starts to develop. Plant 2-6 inches deep. Make sure the glads receive adequate moister during the growing period, especially in the first 6-8 weeks.  Thrips are the major insect pest for glads and can overwinter on stored corms. When digging bulbs in the fall, dust them with a bulb insect dust before putting them into storage.

Minor Spring Bulbs
A variety of minor bulbs are available in the spring that are worth adding to your bulb collection. Cannas, Callas, Anemone De Caen, Ranunculus, Sparaxis, Freesias and Liatris to name a few.

All bulbs available at both Early's Locations (2615 Lorne Ave & 502-51st St E).
